Newcastle had no answer to the power and pace of Mid champions Drom-Inch who inflicted a twenty points defeat on them in the Clean Ireland Recycling County JFC ‘A’ semi-final at New Inn on Saturday.
Following an impressive win over Inane Rovers a week earlier, Newcastle hopes were high going into this game, but those hopes were dashed by the excellence of opposition who will made a bold bid for county honours. Newcastle had the opening point of the game from Daniel Kennedy in the first minute but did not score again until the 52nd minute by which time the Mid champions were “out of sight”, leading 2-14 to 0-2. They led 2-10 to 0-1 at the break.
Drom-Inch were streets ahead of their rivals in terms of mobility, pace, and in their excellent support play. They scored three goals and might well have had three more but Newcastle custodian Darren Goonan spared his side’s blushes with some brave goalkeeping.
While Newcastle did better after the break, there was never the slightest hint that they would cause an upset. Drom extended their lead by four points and David Collins was denied a likely goal for them by Goonan, before sub Oliver Smyth kicked Newcastle’s second point of the game in the 52nd minute. Five points was a very poor return and while it can be said that they did not do themselves justice, equally so it can be said that they were not allowed to by opposition superior to them in most facets of the game.
Darren Goonan was their top performer with John O’Halloran, Brian Hyland, Andrew Fitzpatrick and sub Oliver Smyth others to catch the eye.
