St Mary’s came from three points down in the third quarter to go four up and beat Ballybacon-Grange 0-16 to 0-13 in the South u-21 HC ‘A’ semi-final at Monroe on Saturday.
St Marys had early points from Andrew Ryan, Ciaran Brady and Gearoid Buckley with a Daniel O’Regan reply for Ballybacon.
Colin O’Gorman and Gerry Cronin tied the score and it was 0-5 each at the end of the first quarter with St Mary’s scores from Ciaran Brady and Darren Cass and Daniel O’Regan and Philip Murphy for Ballybacon.
But by the break Ballybacon had gone 0-9 to 0-6 ahead with two points each from Billy Hewitt and O’Regan
to a St Mary’s reply from Cass.
Whatever happened in the dressing room at the interval St Marys came out a different team when they drove everything at Ballybacon-Grange for the next 20 minutes.
The brilliant Seamus Kennedy popped up at vital stages with great defensive play and glorious striking of the ball from the hand and frees to dominate the game. He scored four great points, one from play and three long range frees. Gearoid Buckley pointed two frees, with Sammy Ryan and sub Liam Murchan scoring from play to a Michael Goonan reply from Ballybacon. James O’Mahony, Daniel O’Regan and Aaron Lonergan pulled the lead back to a point but Seamus Kennedy edged the town side two ahead again and then finished the scorinig from a free almost 80 metres out.
Best for St Mary’s were Seamus Kennedy, Jamie Peters, goalie Michael Boland, Sammy Ryan, Darren Cass, Gearoid Buckley and sub Liam Murchan while for Ballybacon, Daniel O’Regan, goalie Colin O’Gorman, Jonathan Rayn and Billy Hewitt did best.
