Danny Owens who drove Moyle Rovers on from midfield during their six point win over Arravale Rovers
Moyle Rovers ....................... 1.14
Arravale Rovers ..................... 1.8
After an entertaining battle in Golden this afternoon Moyle Rovers started their championship campaign in winning fashion when they saw off the spirited challenge of Arravale Rovers in this group two game.
Moyle Rovers opened their championship with a flourish putting in a powerful first half which saw them hold a seven point lead at the break and that margin was just too much for a dogged Arravale to reel in despite a strong second half performance.
Arravale Rovers had that deficit reduced to four points when Moyle Rovers registered the first goal of the game to regain control.
The goal, which was against the run of play, came midway through the second half when corner back Paddy Morrissey attempted to pick out Shane Foley with a crossfield delivery. The ball never reached its intended target as the swirling wind intervened deceiving goalie Timmy Dalton and the ball ended up in the back of the net .
It was a score Moyle Rovers badly needed at that stage as Arravale Rovers, playing with the wind, had put in a very strong opening to the second half.
Moyle Rovers ,with excellent points from Shane Foley and Dara Ryan, extended the lead back out to nine but Arravale showed great character to power their way back into the game again.
A Brian Lowry point from a free was followed by a deserved goal for Shane Leahy after thirty minutes who struck a powerful shot to the net when Arravale Rovers found themselves outnumbering defenders in front of the Moyle Rovers goal.
Dara Ryan scored his second point of the game for Moyle Rovers in injury time to give his team a six point lead but only for Ciaran Kenrick onthe Moyle Rovers goal who pulled off a point blank save from Shane Leahy , the winning margin would have been cut to just three points.
The south side, for the opening game of the season, displayed impressive fluency from the throw in taking some excellent scores with the variation in their attacking play causing all kinds of problems for Arravale.
They mixed up their attacking approach which yielded dividends as they switched from playing incisive ball from the half back line from Ross Mulcahy and Jack Harney, makinghis senior championship debut fitting seamlessly into the Moyle Rovers defence, to building up possession with quick passing moves up the length of the field.
There was intelligent movement inside from the two Foleys, Liam Boland and Aidan McGrath while the workrate of Dara Ryan, David McGrath and Brian Gleeson combined with the surging runs of Danny Owens and Tadgh Fitzgerald was too strong a force for Arravale Rovers to handle.
Arravale Rovers were restricted to just two points , one of them from play, in the first half , but they set about their task of forcing their way back into the game in the second half with great tenacity.
The two Leahy's, NiallDonovan and Bryan Lowry were prominent in that second half as they kept Moyle Rovers back intheir own half for long periods.
The Moyle Rovers goal came at the wrong time for Arravale Rovers who will take a lot from this game by the manner in which they set about their business in the second half.
