Members of Carrick-on-Suir Active Retirement Association celebrated the club’s 15th birthday in style at a party in the Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre last Thursday.
Up to 45 members enjoyed the knees up that included Tai Chi exercises, music, dancing and a special celebration cake and tea.
Maisie Dalton, who sang at the event, was also celebrating her 91st birthday and everyone sang Happy Birthday to her at the function.
A number of local musicians played during the afternoon for the lively group of pensioners.
The first meeting to set up the Active Retirement Club took place in St. Nicholas Parish Hall with 65 interested people attending.
Association Chairman Jimmy Hogan, the late Fr. Pat Cooney and the late Mary Fitzgerald were the founding members.
Jimmy Hogan and Secretary Eileen Mullins praised the great work done by Mary Fitzgerald, a native of Roscrea, and the huge support of Fr. Pat Cooney, who when asked about paying rent for meetings, replied: “No charge.. you’re doing what I should be doing.â€
Jimmy spoke of the great people over the years, who joined the Retirement Association and how all of them were active and doing more than their fair share in helping to run the club, which now boasts up to 80 members.
“This is a great catchment area,†said Jimmy. “We meet twice a month on the second and last Tuesday from 2pm-4pm in the Nano Nagle Chapel. There is great unity between members and when we go on holidays, we meet up with and mix with other groups.â€
Retirement Association members enjoy a 5-day holiday twice a year and attend afternoon dinner dances throughout the year and the Club always makes sure members get home safely in daylight hours.
