Mrs Jo Hyland, who celebrated her 90th birthday with a party of family and friends in the Community Hall on Saturday night June 16, would like to thank her family, her many friends and neighbours, Fr Desmond P.P and Fr Sean Nugent P.P for the many gifts, flowers and cards which she received. Jo thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and we wish her many more birthday celebrations.

Cead Mile Failte to the teachers, students, helpers, who commenced a two week Irish course on Monday, July 2. We hope you enjoy your stay with us.

The old Cemetery Newcastle was the venue for this year’s Mass which was celebrated by Fr Sean Nugent P.P, who offered the Mass for all those interred in the cemetery. Even though the weather was not in our favour, a large congregation was present. Thanks to Fr Sean, Jerry O’Dwyer, Michael Cahill who had the cemetery in an excellent condition and the FAS workers for all their work.

In the past year the ‘Historic Graves Project’ has helped local community groups survey 6734 graves in 79 graveyards, recording not only the names, locations and inscriptions on those headstones, but also recording local stories from local people about their local cemeteries. As part of this project, the Knockmealdown Active steering committee, in partnership with the local communities living along the length of the Knockmealdown mountain range, hopes to train local volunteers on how to record the information contained within their local historic graveyards. If there is enough interest from local communities, Knockmealdown Active hopes to be in a position to organise the basic professional training necessary to conduct the survey, and to supply cameras and other specialised recording equipment. If you think you might be interested send a text message with your name, contact details and parish area to 086-8119571 and we will contact you as soon as possible. If you want more information about the project, check out on the internet.
