Having won a cash prize for runners up in the Cumann na mBunscol National Awards, Annacarty School thought it would be nice to take the children from 5th and 6th class on a day out to Croke Park in Dublin.

Setting off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday December 13, they arrived at Croke Park at 11 a.m. in time for their tour. On the day, the children from Dublin Schools were playing Cumann na mBunscol football finals on the pitch, so it was nice to see and enjoy some of the action. They were then given a great tour of the dressing rooms and other apartments and were also given the history of Croke Park from it’s initial beginnings in the early 1900’s, to the recent completion of the new stands and on the V.I.P. Section to take some photographs and view a dvd, which outlined all the behind the scenes work that goes on in Croke Park on All Ireland Day and the numerous people involved in each area making it a special day.

Next came a talk to the children of how all the stands got their names – the Hogan stand being of particular interest, a plaque commemorating Bloody Sunday was shown as well as the boxes from which the V.I.P.’s watch the games.

Our compliments to the teachers and mentors on taking the children on such an appropriate outing. Hopefully they will appreciate and remember it in time to come.
