There are over 3600 historic graveyards in Ireland with up to 1400 years of history carved into the headstones that have been placed there over the years. In the past year the ‘Historic Graves Project’ has helped local community groups survey 6734 graves in 79 graveyards, recording not only the names, locations and inscriptions on those headstones, but also recording local stories from local people about their local cemeteries. As part of this exciting project, the Knockmealdown Active steering committee, in partnership with the local communities living along the length of the Knockmealdown mountain range, hopes to train local volunteers on how to record the information contained within their local historic graveyards. Before the group proceeds any further we want to gauge the level of interest from people who might be willing to help with this project. If there is enough interest from local communities, Knockmealdown Active hopes to be in a position to organise the basic professional training necessary to conduct the survey, and to supply cameras and other specialised recording equipment. If you think you might be interested in this very worthwhile and rewarding exercise please send a text message with your name, contact details and parish area to 086-8119571 and we will contact you as soon as possible. If you want more information about the project, check out on the internet.

We have received several messages this week to say a massive thank you to the unsung heroes involved in the fantastic boat that is now on display on Main Street Ardfinnan. The boat, which will soon be named and decked in flowers was put up on Saturday afternoon and received what you could describe as a heroes welcome in the village. Strangers stopped their cars to have a look, walkers and cyclists came over to have a chat about the boat and it became a focal and vocal point in the village. Maurice and Aidan you have done a tremendous job in restoring the boat, Pat, Mickey, Nuala, Kitty, Tony, Babs also well done. In fact, this piece would not be complete without thanking the entire Tidy Towns committee who have really enhanced our beautiful village and these people are certainly unsung heroes who work tirelessly to make our community as vibrant and colourful as the people who live here. Thank you to everyone.

The Senior team beat Fethard in the South Quarter Final on Saturday night last in Cahir. We started extremely well and after 24 minutes we were 9 points to 2 up. However, Fethard were not going to make it easy for Ardfinnan and scored a goal just before half time. Fethard continued to dominate the game for a large part of the second half, with 15 minutes to go there was only 2 points in the match.

In the final 10 minute period Ardfinnan had to dig very deep and got some excellent points allowing us to run out winners on the score line of Ardfinnan 0-17 Fethard 1-07. We are now qualified for a South Semi Final.

Best of luck to our Juniors who are out in Championship next Saturday against Clonmel Commercials in Newcastle at 7 pm.
