The death took place in South Tipperary Hospital in mid September of Mary O’Brien of Ballydavid who was in her early seventies.
She had been seriously ill for about a year previous to her death.
Mary lived all her life in the parish of Mullinahone. She was born Mary Shelly in Briarsfield. Because of illness to her mother Mary moved to Mullinahone and was brought up by her aunt and uncle. Mary married Ned O’Brien who was also a local man and they came to live in Ballydavid in the early 70’s. Ned died at an early age in 1994,
Mary was always a housewife and nearly all of her interests centred on her family. She had an interest in music and once attended a Tina Turner concert with her daughters. She regarded Tina Turner as “Simply the Best”.
In her later years she also began to take holidays with her family even getting as far as Spain. As one would expect from such a family orientated person as Mary, she was waked in her own home.
Her remains were removed to St. Michael’s Church where her Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. John McGrath P.P. Mary had eight children, 22 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Many of Mary’s grandchildren took part in her Mass. After Mass her remains were removed to St. Michael’s Cemetery, Killaghy for burial. Mary’s reposal, removal, Funeral Mass and burial were attended by large numbers which proved positive of the esteem in which she was held by all those who knew her or came in contact with her. Our condolences to Austin, Jody, Lily, Terry, Tommy, Edmond all of whom live in Mullinahone and Mary (Prior) and Ellen (Prior) who live in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. Our sympathy also to Mary’s extended family. Mary was respected and greatly liked by the people of Mullinahone. May she rest in peace.
