A 5K road race in aid of Newcastle National School will take place on Sunday, October 14, at 12noon. Entry E8 per person or E10 per family. Registration in the Community Hall at 10.30am. Prizes will be given to the first man, first lady and first local person home. Spot prizes and goodie bags up for grabs. Refreshments in the hall afterwards. Badminton classes are resuming in the GAA centre, Newcastle, on Tuesday, October 9. Primary school pupils from 6pm to 7pm and secondary school pupils from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Beginners welcome.


On Wednesday, September 26, a meeting took place in the Community Hall to discuss the Community Text Alert. The meeting, which was also attended by alert groups from outside the area, was chaired by James O’Neill. The meeting was also attended by Sgt. Brendan Franklin, Peter Butler, Cahir, and Liam Kelly, Ardfinnan. The community alert council will be carrying out a survey to see how many householders will sign up to the Community Text Alert. The next meeting will take place in the Community Hall on Wednesday, October 10, at 8pm.


Newcastle tidy towns committee received a boost in this year’s tidy towns result with an increase to 278 marks from last year’s 274. The extra marks would not be achieved without the hard working committee, FAS workers and the community in general who have done excellent work during the past months, by carrying out planting of trees, shrubs, flowers etc. and keeping the village litter free.


Muintir Na Tire Community Council, in conjunction with National Trails Day, have organised a walk for Sunday, October 7. The route is the Gleann Beag Loop Walk. Registration at 2pm in the community Hall, Newcastle, and the walk will depart from the hall car park at 2.15pm. Refreshments in the hall afterwards.


A meeting of the GAA committee will be held in the clubrooms on Wednesday, October 3, at 8pm.

South Junior Football Final - The provisional date for the south finals is Sunday, October 14.

U10 Blitz - our u10s hurlers travelled to Ballyporeen on Sunday, September 22, playing four games in all. Due to illness we only had seven players on the pitch, even so they gave a great performance by winning three games and drawing on the last. Team: Ciaran O’Loughlin, Alice Ryan, Yvonne Clancy, Steven O’Connor, Jack Kelly, Aaron O’Neill and Max Zimmerman.
